an option to link directly to a post would be nice
also, when there's a lot of quotes it's hard to tell who's saying what, example: http://gaminghq.net/showthread.php?tid=579

  Summer 2017: Reviving GHQ
Posted by: entity - Jul 23rd 2017, 1:05 AM - Forum: Updates and Specials - Replies (1)

We'll be overhauling the look and feel of the site, but we'll be keeping some things the way they are. We want to make it easier for you to find what you're looking for, and make it easier for new content to be noticed. A new feed will be added to the front page where the latest activity is shown to everyone, donators are able to boost their posts to be more visible. The feed will check for new content and display it as soon as it's posted. You'll still be able to browse specific sections.

Overall, we'll be changing most areas of the website. The changes to the front page are already live.

  Sponsored streams: issues
Posted by: entity - Mar 19th 2017, 11:20 PM - Forum: Bugs - No Replies

For tracking multiple issues related to our Sponsored Streams page.
  • When submitting a a stream after previewing your submission, the welcome stage isn't triggered and causes some issues.
  • Stream follower and view totals aren't loading in some cases. We've got a solution to limit the amount of Twitch API requests, will apply soon and will likely fix this issue.

Streamer Sponsorship: guidelines and how to join
Posted by: entity - Feb 5th 2017, 7:23 AM - Forum: Updates and Specials - Replies (2)

this is a very new system, we'll update this soon. we'll be touching up the stream listing and stream pages soon

We want to help you get started with your Twitch channel. Partner with GamingHQ and have your stream featured on the front page and Streams page for tons of active members to see to come and watch and grow your stream. Special Perks and tag on the forum for members to see and recognize, and a vouch for a revamp for your stream. It's free and it always will be.

Only verified accounts can add their streams. To become verified, message any of the following people and we'll get right on it. This is to keep low quality and low effort entries to a minimum.
@ajax @Vendetta @entity

Features
  • Have your stream promoted on the front page for guaranteed viewers and growth!
  • Special and unique streamer tag on the forum which comes with special perks
  • By request you can have a revamp of your current stream design (profile picture, cover, offline etc) done by a professional (If not used you will still have one free vouch for a revamp during our sponsorship). This offer doesn't expire, so you can claim it whenever you want.

Guidelines
  • Must use the image provided in your description of stream. This helps both of us. Our service is free, and this is all we ask for you to do in return.
  • Mass promoting your stream on our forum is considered spam. You are welcome to promote your stream on your profile or in an appropriate forum thread. You're also free to reply to your entry in our Stream database, this will bump it up to the top of the discussions for everyone to see.
  • Your presence on the forum is needed. Don't join just to drop your name and then leave. You don't have to visit all the time, just drop in and have a look around every so often.
  • If you remove our image from your bio without notice, we'll consider that as you saying you don't want to be sponsored anymore.
Tips
  • When you go live, be sure to reply to your stream comments so your stream gets bumped to the first position.

This is a dummy thread for a vulnerability we're tracking. Currently we believe the vulnerability can't be exploited on a large scale, but we're taking steps to secure it.

This vulnerability can not be used to access user data.

  The Future
Posted by: Vendetta - Jan 28th 2017, 7:23 AM - Forum: Updates and Specials - Replies (3)

We've just hit another milestone, marking our final design for the site. Xilette is also always updating so it always looks polished with no bugs. This was different a long time ago. We had a very simple site with a very small community. Everything since then has changed. The theme is now nice on the eyes, the community is arguably (jk, it is) better than it was back then as well. But whats next? what do we picture ghq going in the next couple years, and what do we see it looking like.

Where its going
We want GamingHQ to not be just restricted to a gaming forum. Yes its branded "gaming" right in the name, and that is the main thing we are trying to offer you, but it is also somewhere you can express your thoughts (in the correct board of course lol). I want this to gradually be more shown in through the site (If it isn't enough already).

What we see it looking like
As of the time of this post, our community is not huge. We have around 20 active members roughly that some just browse the site while some make some of the community. Every forum wants to blow up and suddenly have 20k members but I want us around the middle. Arguably having a SHIT ton of members is nice, but where you cant recognize any people and you feel like you know no one on a forum is not. But if we suddenly get hit by 20,000 members I wouldn't mind 1f609. I believe at this time we will have a trusted staff team (and moderators that actually do something and moderate the forum lol)

  Welcome to Xilette
Posted by: entity - Jan 26th 2017, 10:29 PM - Forum: Updates and Specials - Replies (13)

After a very long development stage, we're finally getting rid of the live theme to bring in it's replacement.

A late design of the previous theme, but nowhere near as bad as the live theme

Inbetween Xero and Xilette, improvements, but not quite there yet

The first version of Xilette, roughly 8 months ago

The final, and current version of Xilette. Totally new colors, ditching our old gray.

Thanks to everyone who's stuck around (@Variables, @Omni, mostly it really) while we got our shit together. Now that we've finally finished with the design, we can focus on building the community. We'll be needing staff members since we demoted 3 of them recently, we'll be a lot more harsh on staff inactivity now.

Currently, Xilette sits at 1300px, but it will soon be updated for mobile devices. It was built to be resized and responsive, all that we need to do is fine-tune it.

If you come across any issues, report them in this thread and we'll get on it.

  Reactions: beta
Posted by: entity - Jan 24th 2017, 11:06 AM - Forum: Development - Replies (6)

Hi,

We'll be beta testing reactions for a bit. While we've switched over to reactions, the "like" system will be disabled but not removed, so all of the likes will remain in the database in case we decide not to go with reactions.

Unfortunately there's no way to convert likes to reactions (yet), so everyone will be starting out at zero.

Reactions now count towards your community reputation

You'll now be recognized as being a terrible member or a quality contributor. Between -1 and 5 is neutral, anything under -1 is negative, anything over 5 is positive.

Neutral
[Image: qhwLIl6.png]

Positive
[Image: ZmhwBHU.png]

Negative (it's richard, so we added -10k to his rep but that's just because)

It works like you'd think it would. If you have 5 positive reactions and 6 negative reactions, you'll have -1 overall rep. 100 positive and 10 negative would be 90. You get the idea.

"Angry" and "Sad" are neutral reactions, they don't affect your rep because they don't really mirror the actual post quality, only the way it makes you feel.

  Award and Reaction ideas needed
Posted by: entity - Jan 22nd 2017, 5:15 PM - Forum: Development - Replies (8)

We're bringing back awards in Xilette, and we're looking for ideas for awards.

Also, we'll be beta testing a reaction system where you can react to posts, sort of like Facebook and Discord. We'll definitely be adding positive/negative reactions. If possible, please stick to emojis since they're the easiest to get a large amount of while still matching styles. Here's where you can find those

  Account Security and you
Posted by: entity - Dec 28th 2016, 5:11 PM - Forum: Updates and Specials - No Replies

I'll be talking about how you can improve your security, and how we're taking steps to improve your security. Security isn't simply achieved, it's a process. Nothing is 100% safe, it's always ongoing. And we're always working to keep your data safe.

How can you improve security?

  •  Don't reuse passwords. Sure, you might have a really good password for accounts you care about, but we can't do anything about how other sites handle passwords. For example, 000webhost stored millions of passwords in plaintext. You may feel this is really inconvenient to remember a password for every site, but you don't have to, use Keepass to store all of your passwords.
  • Use a strong password. Keepass can generate a password for you with whatever settings you want. "vzjYz*#b7^s%+m2knvu9" is the kind of password you should be using.
  • Check your account sessions to see if your account is being used by someone other than you.
  • Make sure you always have access to your email, and don't use disposable emails. You can always change your email provided you can still use your registration email. The only way you can get back into your account is by resetting your password through the email you have listed for your account.
How are we improving security?

  • We don't store your passwords, we store a hash of your password. And we're using one of the best methods possible, bcrypt.
  • We require a captcha on every login to make it difficult for attackers.
  • We offer 2 Factor Auth for all accounts, and require it for Team Members.
  • Whenever an account is accessed (or a failed attempt is made), it's logged and available for our admins to view.
We'll continue to add new layers of security as the community grows and new issues are presented.

  Community Guidelines [12/27/16]
Posted by: entity - Dec 27th 2016, 3:25 AM - Forum: Updates and Specials - No Replies

Normally this would be listed on our about page, but for easy editing and contribution from our entire staff team, we're putting it here.

Our guidelines are divided into a couple sections for easier moderation and better clarity.
  • Core guidelines must be followed by everyone, including team members, and usually have little to no slack for violations. Denoted by 3 asterisks (***).
  • Community guidelines are to keep the place from turning into Tumblr and to improve everyone's experience here. Denoted by 1 asterisk (*).
  • Minor guidelines are more of suggestions which are not often enforced by action. No denotation.

There is no concrete "break rule x, receive punishment y" because it would become really hard to keep track of. Instead, our team members are encouraged to use their own judgement (which is why we have our own special team guidelines) when doing their jobs. Also, we have a warning system in use which targets repeat offenders, resulting in a ban once you reach a threshold of warning points. Warning points eventually expire after their set dates, however, points issued by admins do not expire.

If you think you've witnessed staff abuse, please contact @ajax or send us an email at: support@gaminghq.net

Your Account

1. Using a disposable email ***
If you don't know what this is, you're not who we're targeting with this rule anyway. This is strictly enforced because for one, these typically expire and you risk becoming permanently locked out of your account. And also because of how much this is abused by spammers. We automatically add the email domain of banned members to our blacklist, and should this become a bigger issue we'll switch from the blacklist to a whitelist (only allowing services like gmail and yahoo.)

2. Signing up to advertise *
We love promoting content creators, we even have a page for this. Don't sign up if you plan on advertising something unrelated (a forum, for example) and then ghost us. Unfortunately this is a grey area for us, so we'll handle this case-by-case.

3. Using more than one account
Privacy is very important to us, but if people are abusive with multiple accounts we'll have to begin blocking proxies and VPNs.

Your part in the community

4. Spamming ***
We won't go easy on you for this. Repeatedly posting low quality content, spam tagging other people, and posting the same thing all count as spam. A staff member will let you know if your content is breaking this rule and you'll be given a chance to stop.

5. Posting anything that's illegal ***
Come on, not even 4chan allows this sort of shit.

6. NSFW Content *
You're free to post NSFW content if it's either in an NSFW section or tagged as such in the gallery. Anywhere else and you'll be warned. It's NSFW if it shows nudity or is sexually suggestive. This means NSFW profile photos and cover photos aren't allowed.

7. Harassment ***
There's a line between giving someone shit and harassing them, don't cross that line. If you're sending someone harassing messages your account will be investigated by an admin and those messages will be visible.

8. Advertising ***
We love promoting content creators, if you'd like to share your Twitch/YouTube or other personal account we have a place to do that. But you'll be banned if you advertise another community (e.g., a subreddit, forum, or Discord) without permission from a team member.

9. Backseat moderating
Trying to enforce the rules yourself just causes trouble, instead you should report whatever/whoever is causing trouble.

Things we have absolute zero tolerance for

Doxing, threatening to dox, or posting a dox ***

Threatening to DDOS our community or a member of our community ***

For right now that's all. As the community grows new guidelines will be added as needed.

Rebuilding GamingHQ, Christmas design, and 2nd year anniversary
Posted by: entity - Dec 8th 2016, 12:16 AM - Forum: Updates and Specials - Replies (4)

So the community is basically dead. We've dismissed a couple staff members because they're no longer active. We were slowly losing activity ever since the hype of the minecraft server died out, and now that project is completely gone. Ajax and myself have discussed a 3rd attempt at one but agreed that for right now it's a good idea to focus on the forum. We have halted all work on Xero in favor of a new project which we're making progress on. The live theme will not be updated, Xero may be updated into a "classic" forum feel as the new project has a more "social media" approach.

I mentioned us dismissing several staff members, so that would normally mean we have an opening, but with the community being dead that's not the case. We will eventually need to fill their roles though.

The current plan is simple: design > features > users. We want to focus on the design, then add/change some features, then we'll work on building up activity.

This isn't really a post, this is more of a curtsy thing.

Can people please stop swearing and saying f sake etc. i know most people on here are adults or have swore before but we would still like to be a family friendly website.

Mostly if you swear me or another mod will change it, i know i change it or just completely remove it. It's not a big deal but If you continually swear, there will be a discussion between staff members to see if there needs to be something done and short bans to be rolled out

I have locked this topic. Please remember to follow the rules while using our forum.

  Reporting Issues after the upgrade
Posted by: entity - Nov 10th 2015, 7:46 PM - Forum: Closed Issues - Replies (2)

Please report any issues you find here.

Do note that missing features is very likely due to the fact that all plugins are disabled for the time being. We are mostly looking for the following:

  • Layout issues
  • Fatal/internal error pages
Even if it doesn't have any of the above, report it anyway.

Also, now that the software is upgraded we can continue work on the theme. Thanks for your patience guys.
